Surma Sixers Sylhet stunned defending champions Dhaka Dynamites with a nine-wicket victory in the opening match of the 2017 Bangladesh Premier League in Sylhet on Saturday.
Sylhet's two foreign recruits -- Upul Tharanga and Andre Fletcher -- took the match away from Dhaka as they added 125 runs in the opening stand while pursuing a small target of 137.
Fletcher hit 63 runs off 51 balls before getting out only 12 runs shy of victory. An aggressive Tharanga remained not out for 69 runs off 43 balls.
Winning the toss, Surma Sixers Sylhet captain Nasir Hossain asked Dhaka Dynamites led by Shakib Al Hasan to bat first.
However, the star-studded Dhaka side failed to post adequate runs on the baord as the batsmen got out on a regular intervals. Dhaka managed to make 136 runs in 20 overs for the loss of 7 wickets.
"We didn't play according to our potential. Still very early in the tournament, and hopefully we can bounce back," Shakib told the post-match presentation ceremony.
Man of the match Tharanga, a Sri Lankan international cricketer, gave credit to bowlers for keeping Dhaka under 140 runs.
Earlier, the 5th edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) T20 was inaugurated at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium.
