The BNP has demanded resignation of the food minister for rice price spiral caused by corruption, inefficiency and lack of farsightedness of the government.
"The government has failed to run the country. Prices of food have shot up, causing enormous sufferings to the common people and food shortage. But, the government does not want to admit this," said BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
Criticizing the food minister for his comment over rice price hike, he said "They want to shoulder the responsibility of their corruption and incompetency to others. Now, they are blaming pro-BNP businessmen for rice price hike. The food minister should resign for creating such a crisis."
Fakhrul came up with the demand while addressing a discussion held at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh on Saturday. Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal organised the programme.
Earlier on Friday, food minister Adv Qamrul Islam at a programme blamed pro-BNP businessmen for the hike in rice price.
Mirza Fakhrul also urged all to get united to compel the government for holding the next general election under an impartial caretaker government.
