An elderly devotee died on the ground of Biswa Ijtema now underway on the bank of the river Turag on the outskirt of the capital.
The deceased is--Kazi Azizul Haque, 65, of Magura district.
According to the witnesses, he was hospitalised at 10 pm on Thursday, immediately after he felt severe stomach pain.
Later, he died while undergoing treatment at 11pm, said a duty officer of Tongi Police Station.
The first phase of the three-day Ijtema began with 'Aam Bayan' (general sermons) by noted scholars after Fazr prayers that will end with Akheri Munajat (final prayers) on January 14.
Thousands of devotees from home and abroad started to throng the Ijtema ground on the bank of the Turag since Wednesday night to take part in the religious event seeking divine blessings of the Almighty Allah.
The second phase of the Tongi Ijtema will begin on January 19 at the same venue and it is scheduled to end with Akheri Munajat (final prayers) on January 21.
Tablig Jamaat has been organising the Ijtema at this venue since 1967. However, the Ijtema is held in two phases since 2011 to ease the accommodation problem.
