The Supreme Court has upheld a death sentence against Jatiya Party leader and former state minister Syed Mohammed Kaiser for crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War.

A four-member Appellate Division bench headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain on Tuesday read out the summary of the judgment on Kaiser's appeal against the death penalty handed by the International Crimes Tribunal.

While the court partially accepted the appeal, it nonetheless preserved the death sentence against him in a majority verdict.

A Muslim League leader in 1971, Kaiser was sentenced to death on Dec 23, 2014, after being found guilty of murder, arson, loot, rape and genocide in Brahmanbaria and Habiganj during wartime.
