Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader today warned that the government has taken steps against those who are involved in the price hike essential commodities.
“It is an urgent to control market. Dishonest traders are involved in the price hike of essential commodities. And that’s why the government has taken a harsher stance against them to stop price hike of essentials,” he told a press briefing on temperately affairs at the Secretariat here.
Quader, also the Awami League General Secretary, said if one creates abnormal situation and artificial crisis of goods in the markets, the government will have to take stern actions against his or her.
About the soaring price of vegetables and onion, he said a situation was created in the country and it will take a little time to bring the price of onion at normal level.
“But the government is trying its best to bring down the price of onion…I think the situation will not linger more,” the AL general secretary said.
The winter vegetables have already started hitting the markets, he said, hoping that the vegetable markets will become normal soon.
Replying to a question about the anti-corruption drive, Quader said the drive against corrupt people continues and when time comes, everything will be revealed.
About Dhaka city polls, he said the Awami League is looking for
candidates for the elections of both Dhaka south and north city corporations.
“We want to win in the Dhaka city polls…to hold the Dhaka city elections in time, the councils of Dhaka north and south city units of Awami League were held,” he said.
Clean image leadership has been given to the Dhaka north and south city units of AL aiming to win in city polls, the AL general secretary said: “We want to participate in the Dhaka city polls and want to win”.
About the aspirants of Dhaka city elections, he said the AL nomination board, led by AL President Sheikh Hasina, will decide who will be candidates in the city polls. “But, now we are looking for candidates and thinking of
it,” he added.
Replying to another question whether there will be any new face in the post of AL general secretary in the AL next national council, Quader said: “I repeatedly said you that it is the jurisdiction of the AL President. We
always accept the decision the party president takes whether I remain the general secretary or not.”
Earlier in the day, Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka Riva Ganguly Das met Quader at his office here.
Talking to reporters after the meeting, Quader said they discussed the progress of seven ongoing projects jointly implemented by Bangladesh and India.
